Rome Fiumicino Airport and how to get to Termini Station

Getting from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Termini Station in the center of the capital is easy, and there are several different ways for every taste and budget. The most famous of them is Leonardo Express, the cheapest are buses, and the most comfortable taxi or transfer. Now consider each of the methods in more detail.

For most travelers, acquaintance with Rome begins from Roma Termini Station, and many of them specifically try to stay just somewhere nearby. And there are several reasons for this.

  • From the Roma Termini train station, it is easy to get to any corner of Rome, because right under the station there are branches of two (and so far the only) metro lines.
  • Roma Termini is an important urban transport hub. Even if you are not a fan of the metro, it is easy to get from anywhere to Rome by bus.
  • It is with Roma Termini that the majority of trains connecting the capital with the largest cities in Italy leave. This is especially convenient if you plan several day trips from Rome - for example, to Naples or Florence.
  • Finally, travelers arriving late in the evening at Rome Fiumicino airport or planning an early departure try to stop closer to the train station to make travel from the airport to the city and back as easy as possible.

Leonardo Express train from Fiumicino to Termini Station

Rome Fiumicino Airport and Termini Central Station are connected by a separate railway line. The train station is adjacent to the airport, and the specialized route to Termini is called Leonardo Express.

It is not difficult to find a station at the airport - numerous signs lead to it, which are simply impossible not to notice. The station is a 5-10 minute walk from the exit from the baggage claim area.

Leonardo Express trains leave from the airport for Rome every 30 minutes

Leonardo Express trains leave for Rome twice an hour from early morning until late in the evening, the journey time is about 30 minutes. At the station at the airport, Leonardo Express trains always depart from the second platform, at Termini they arrive at the 23rd or 24th platform.

Tickets for the Leonardo Express train will cost 14 Euros (2019) for a one-way trip, children under 12 years old traveling with an adult can use the Express for free. Tickets can be purchased at the box office at the station, in special vending machines.

When purchasing tickets online, “Rome Airport” must be entered at the point of departure and “Rome” entered. Please note that the system will issue flights for all trains to Rome, and not all of them follow Termini. Using the same site you can find train tickets between any cities in Italy.

You can buy tickets for Leonardo Express at the box office at the station and in numerous vending machines

It is important to note that before boarding a train, tickets must be composted. Special composters are located before entering the platform.

Before boarding the train you need to punch the ticket

Please note that in Rome Fiumicino Airport, in addition to the Leonardo Express, regional trains also stop running to other railway stations in Rome. Therefore, be sure to watch the scoreboard at the station, so that by mistake you do not board the wrong train. There are such cases.

Buses from the airport to the Station

Another popular way to get from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Termini Station is by bus. Travelers know much less about them, and, meanwhile, is the cheapest way to get to the center of Rome and no less convenient than the Leonardo Express.

The bus stop at the airport is located near Terminal No. 3 (most international flights fly here), and in Rome they go to Via Marsala - that is, almost at the same point as Leonardo Express. From the bus stop to the entrance to the main lobby of Termini Station - from a force of 20-30 meters.

Buses are the cheapest way to get from the airport to Termini Station

The ultimate bus in the city - a visor on the left is already Termini

In April 2016, BlogoItaliano tested the service on itself. It turned out to be even more convenient than Leonardo Express, since the bus stop is closer to the exit from the Terminal than the railway station. On how to book bus tickets, we recorded a separate video.

Please note that the ticket must be printed and presented before boarding the bus. Unopened tickets at the control are not accepted.

Helpful advice: When going to Rome, be sure to download a mobile audio guide around Rome for the iPhone link, which was released in 2019. This is a ready-made audio tour of the most popular route in the city.

The audio guide has a built-in card on which everything is already marked. It works even without the Internet, and GPS navigation makes it easy to track your location and find the way to the nearest audio excursion points without the cost of mobile traffic.

The full version costs only € 5, but will save a lot of money on guides and excursions. In addition, the first 5 points (out of 60) are available for free. You can download the application on this page.

Transfer and Taxi from Fiumicino Airport to Termini

You can also get to Termini Station from Fiumicino Airport by taxi. And here there are several options:

Ordinary city taxi

You can try to catch a car at the exit from the Terminal - as in any major airport in the world there are many of them. Taxi cars in Rome are easily recognizable by their white color and the checkers on the roof.

The length of the quest with the search for a free car and a successful landing directly depends on the arrival time of your flight and seasonality. A separate nuance is the taxi drivers themselves, and here it all depends on your luck - who you get on. Most of them, by the way, do not speak English.

Official taxis in Rome in white

Formally, a uniform official tariff applies to a trip from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Termini - 48 Euros, but the nuance is that the station is located at the very border of its coverage area. And if a taxi driver stops you just on the other side of the street, he will be able to demand payment on the counter. And it will be right.

Order a taxi and transfer via the Internet

An alternative to a city taxi is to order a car from Fiumicino Airport to Termini Station or any other place in Rome via the Internet (in this case, the driver will meet passengers with a sign with their names at the exit from the baggage claim area). Depending on the class of car and service you choose, the price may vary slightly, but, in any case, it is quite comparable to the cost of a regular city taxi.

The most popular services of this type:

  • Kiwitaxi (cheaper)
  • Bookyourtransfer (BlogoItaliano wrote about this service in detail here)

By the way, if you travel with a large company, in Kiwitaxi you can calculate not only an ordinary car, but also a minibus.

Car hire at Rome Airport

Another way to get from Fiumicino Airport, which makes sense to mention, is by renting a car. But there are some nuances.

Although car rental is inexpensive in Italy, and the entire booking process is as simple as possible, it must be borne in mind that in the historic center of Rome there are restrictions on the entry of vehicles. So renting a car just to get to Termini is not very far-sighted.

It takes about an hour to get from Fiumicino Airport to Termini Station.

But Italy is a country of autotravels. And therefore, if you are interested not so much in Termini station as in the opportunity to get to the city, then it makes sense to take a car back to Fiumicino: it is here that one of the largest car rental centers in Italy is located, uniting many specialized companies.

Well, in order not to waste time searching for the most advantageous of the existing offers, you can use the popular European rental car price comparison service Rentalcars. Just try it in action - it's worth it.

Hotels in the Termini and Fiumicino Station area:

If we figured out the issue of transport from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Termini Station, now is the time to think about housing. Unlike cars, hotels and lodging in the Eternal City are expensive, and they are often the main cost item for travelers.

The good news is that you can often save up to 40-50% of the initial cost of a room if you take a hotel room under one of the booking shares. Below is a list of current Rome hotel sales in the Termini area:
